Often when we think about vacations and holidaying, we tend to lean towards areas with beaches like Malindi, Watamu or Lamu and the popular places like Nakuru and Naivasha that we forget the unexplored areas.
In the northern part of Kenya lies Garissa County, one of the least visited areas, which has so much to offer in nature and sightseeing places.
It has an estimated population of about 623,000 people, predominantly the Somali group, a branch of the Cushitic speakers. The largest town in the county is Garissa town, which doubles up as the county’s capital.
Visit the area to learn a thing or two about their way of life, language and values which they hold in high regard.
The easiest way to get to Garissa is via road, and it will give you the chance to marvel at beauty along the way. An airstrip is also found in Garissa town, in case you have little time on your hands but still want to tour the place.
Among the places you can visit are national reserves and popular resorts to dine, relax and enjoy quality alone either alone or with family and friends, and is your go-to place if you need some under-the-radar kind of vibe since the place hardly gets crowded.
Below is a list of places to visit while in Garissa, and the respective activities to engage in while at it.
Boni National Reserve
Located towards the south of Garissa, almost bordering Lamu County, is this national reserve that is home to hundreds of animal species including the rare ones like the Topi antelope.
The animals include rhinos, elephants, monkeys, waterbucks, giraffes, bush pigs, wild dogs, antelopes, zebras and duikers.
Visitors are taken on game drives to see the animals in proximity and even take photos of the stunning animals, so be sure to bring your camera with you.
Apart from wildlife seeing, bird watching is also a top activity at the reserve, since hundreds of various birds constantly flock there in search of food and water.
It is intriguing to see them flying in their flocks, painting the skies in different shades, and listening to them singing is simply therapeutic.
Nature trails are found within the reserve, ideal for treks and walks to get inbound with nature, and marvel at the different plant species and insects seen along the way.
Climax your trip by picnicking within the reserve, and top it up with stunning photos to capture the beautiful scenery.
Garissa Cultural and Heritage Centre
Located within Garissa town, this should be your first stop over to learn about the intriguing Somali people who are such ardent holders of the values passed down to them over hundreds of years.
The heritage centre was set up to ensure the continuity of the epic culture by preserving it. Here, artefacts dating way back are stored, starting with farm implements, cooking tools and even weaponry. The guides are well versed with what each artefact represents and will give you details on the same.
Somalis are also basket weavers, and some of their wares and jewellery are sold to interested guests. The ornaments are stunning and so are the baskets, so be sure to take one home with you.
Annually in September, a cultural week is hosted at the centre where revellers come from far and beyond to behold the beautiful culture.
You will be in for a treat should you happen to attend the ceremony; the dances and traditional songs are epic, their garments are stunning, and I don’t need to mention how tasty their local delicacies are, especially their meat cooked in herbs, and wash it down with their specially preserved drinks.
Arawale National Reserve
This vast piece of land has been widely credited for its efforts toward saving the endangered Hirola. Other animals found within the reserve include antelopes, giraffes, rhinos, elephants and the Grevy’s zebra.
Game drives and safari tours are offered, which is the perfect opportunity to closely interact with the animals and get awed by how beautiful they look.
Afterwards, you can go on a nature walk for that intimate experience, breathing in the crisp fresh air, marvelling at the lush green scenery and cool breeze and getting lost in your thoughts.
Bird watching is highly recommended at the reserve where you get to see different bird species such as eagles, crows, and marabou stock.
Picnics and group activities would thrive here, so be sure to tag along your group of friends and family to make memories together.
If you have a thirst for wild experiences, consider camping in the woods of the reserve, where the only thing that will dominate your night is the chirping crickets and the occasional howling hyenas at a distance.
Fall asleep staring at the stars and moonlit sky, light bonfires at night to warm you up, hunt in the wild and make your meals, then wake up to the beautiful singing birds in the serene environment. This experience is simply unrivalled.
Garissa University
This is among the biggest tertiary institution in the region where students from all parts of the country go to further their studies.
It also bears historical significance since on 2nd April 2015, four armed gunmen, allegedly of the Al-Shabab group, stormed the university and massacred 148 students and injured 79 others in a horrific bloodbath.
A monument has been set up bearing the names of the deceased; you should pass by to pay some respect.
Garissa Community Giraffe Sanctuary
Situated about three kilometres from Garissa town, the sanctuary is a project of the local community aimed at rescuing giraffes and caring for them.
The facility is home to hundreds of giraffes, including the stunning white giraffe that can be spotted from far. Apart from giraffes, you can occasionally spot monkeys swinging on the trees and the antelopes as well.
The keepers will take you across the sanctuary, explain about the giraffes and even let you feed them. A nature trail is found within the sanctuary where you can go for walks, sightsee and even birdwatch.
You will be required to pay a small fee at the entrance, which essentially goes towards improving the facility and caring for the animals.
If you are feeling a little generous, don’t forget to tip the wardens and keepers for doing such a commendable job.
Lake Ishaqbini and Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy
The Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy was also set up with the aim of protecting the endangered Hirola but has gradually become home to other animals such as giraffes, zebras, warthogs and ostriches.
The Conservancy is a project of the local Somali community, which has even employed youths to patrol in hope of reducing idleness and also protecting the animals at the facility.
The project has further brought developments in the area due to the tourists visiting the place, so don’t forget to be generous with your tips, as the proceeds go towards developing the community.
Nature trails are found within the conservancy that will take you through beautiful vegetation and bird-watching adventures.
Aside from the wildlife attractions, a lake bearing the same name is located within the conservancy, perfect for sightseeing and photo sessions.
